Introduction to Globalization

グローバリゼーション論

This course will introduce students to the process of globalization and to the variety of ways that people, regions and nations around the world are connected to each other. In class, we will study definitions of globalization, the history of globalization and major types of globalization (political, economic, cultural). We will analyze the positive and negative impacts of globalization, examine the idea of world citizenship, and discuss the challenges people face living in a globalized world.

International Exchange and Regional Studies

地域と国際交流

This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of international exchange. In class, we will learn about the aims of international exchange, look at regional case studies (from history, fiction and current events), analyze problems that can accompany international exchange and study the factors (linguistic, cultural, political) that can ensure successful international exchange.

Regional Culture Research

地域文化調査（国際交流）

This course is an introduction to research on local culture with a focus on international exchange in the Tottori region. The course consists of lectures, guest speakers, fieldwork and student presentations. Students will study the current state of international exchange in Tottori, select a survey topic, do individual research and submit a final project.

My name is Kip Cates. I come from Vancouver, Canada. I studied Modern Languages (French, German, Japanese) at the University of British Columbia and have an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading, England. My interests are foreign languages, world travel and global issues (peace, human rights, the environment). I’ve worked, lived in or traveled to over 50 countries and speak 9 languages. At Tottori University, I teach courses on English, globalization and international exchange. I’m active in the field of global education and international exchange. Let’s study together about world regions, world cultures and world issues. Join me in thinking about how we can contribute to the world and become real “world citizens”!

キップ・ケイツはカナダのブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学で現代言語を専攻して学士号を取得、後にイギリスのレディング大学で応用言語学で修士号を取得した。鳥取大学には1985年に赴任。英語とグローバル教育を教えている。また、コロンビア大学東京校の大学院でもグローバル教育を教えている。タイム（とっとり国際交流連絡会）の運営委員。今までに50カ国を旅行し、9つの言語を話す。
