Field of Learning Science

The department of Learning Science is aimed at the cultivation of learning abilities, which provides the basis for everyone in regional society to lead a rich and cultured life throughout their lifetime. In order for learners of developmental age groups, such as elementary or secondary school students, to play important roles in a society of life-long learning, research and education are conducted focusing on the learning process, related support, and implementation. Especially from the viewpoint of the uniqueness of individual subjects, students are expected to thoroughly study each course, curriculum, goals of the coursework, cognitive processes of the coursework and learner characteristics, study material development, and the like. At the same time, guidance is provided so that students can master research approaches for central subjects and accomplish the research which will help them improve their expertise.

Study Contents and Features (Features of the Curriculum)

The classes are divided into three categories: the basic, major, and developmental subjects. The program is designed for students to study theories and practices in a well-balanced manner. On theoretical aspects, students are required to choose and study 10 units of subjects among the major and developmental subjects offered in the Field of Learning Science. On practical aspects, students are obliged to study the basic subject L. School Education (4 units). In addition, depending on individual interest, students can enhance their expertise in each subject’s education. As many as 11 teachers are in charge of this division. For any and all classes, the Affiliated Kindergarten, Elementary and Secondary Schools, and School for Children with Special Needs are available as research fields.

Study of Learning Support as Central ObjectiveThis curriculum pertains mainly to those who want to be elementary school teachers or in-service teachers at the elementary or secondary school level. Targeting elementary school teachers who teach several subjects, or secondary school teachers specializing in single subjects, this class is expected to provide review and finishing of the skills needed to plan classes and arrange learning support.

Deepening Knowledge in your Subject of Specialty

Among the subjects offered in the Field of Learning Science, students are allowed to select and focus on an area of specialization. They are expected to master the knowledge and skills for class planning or studying of teaching material in secondary school.

Research Contents of the Department of Learning Science

ADACHI, Kazumi
Division of English education into three areas of “knowing,” “thinking,” and “feeling,” and development of teaching methods and materials for each area. Particular focus on research into teaching methods for speaking and writing as the latest theme. In addition, textbook development for listening comprehension and grammar, targeting unskilled English learners.
SEKI, Koji

The purpose of our research is to examine the effect of physical conditions in the various environments such as aging, life style, and exercise-induced energy metabolism. In the present, we study the effect of aerobic exercise in the forest and the relationship between the child’s physical fitness and health in the physical education.
Studies on mechanisms and processes of human cognition, thought, and emotion regarding sounds and music, from the standpoint of musical cognitive psychology. Specifically, researches on a wide range of subjects from low-level reactions against each of the musical components, such as pitch, volume, and tone, to high-level elements regarding appreciation, performance, and composition.
Research into development of nature recognition and formation of concepts within children during science studies with the focus on learning support and material development for that purpose. In particular, surveys and research on how to support children in science education studying the subjects of material and energy at the level of elementary or secondary school.
Studies on graphonomy and graphonomic education. In particular, analyses of the establishment and history of handwriting styles, with the focus on writer consciousness and sense of characters. In addition, development of curriculum which will encourage students and working people to continue learning transcription and calligraphy with motivation.

Development of teaching materials which will cultivate the “scientific education” of infants, children, and students. Related research in class planning (designing, practice, analysis, and redesigning) to maximize efficacy of teaching material.

Cognitive psychological research on the ways in which people’s technical capability, skills, sense of technology, and motivation change through manufacturing activities (relations with people or goods), as well as studies on monozukuri (manufacturing) in career education and lifelong learning and its significance.
YABE, Toshiaki
Studies on the construction principle of curricula in subject pedagogy and self-evaluation of learners, aimed at the establishment of theory of goals and evaluation in mathematics education. In addition, research into teaching and the learning process of problem solving and theoretical development of plausible reasons.

Clarification of the history of “”Japanese” established as a subject, for the purpose of observing its autonomous basis, helpfulness, and limitation, which will lead to constructing the framework of linguistic education in the future. In addition, research into history of Japanese teachers as learners.

In response to changes in art and its surrounding condition or educational reform and the like, the contents of art education are beginning to change to a great deal. I am currently engaged in investigation of a variety of art teaching materials, reviewing the significance of each of the materials from an educational standpoint, and development of new teaching materials.

Research in difficulties that children or students face in learning arithmetic or mathematics as epistemological obstacles, in terms of their conditions or methods for overcoming them. In addition, studies regarding lesson design, practice, analysis and the like, related to arithmetic and mathematics, in collaboration with in-service teachers in and out of Tottori Prefecture.
