Field of Regional Culture

This department is designed to train specialists who will contribute to regional revitalization and development from cultural aspects such as art. To that end, education and research are conducted on both theoretical and practical aspects in respect to planning and implementation of regional culture and art projects based on discoveries and analyses of cultural significance in regional lives and cultural issues in the regions, effective policy making and evaluation, and deep understanding of the vitalization of regional culture by taking advantage of international communication skills and cultural creativity.

Features of the Curriculum

Features of the CurriculumAs a whole, through obligatory subjects such as L. International Exchange and Cross Cultural Understanding, and L. Advanced Study of Creative City, students are expected to come to a deep understanding of today’s world in cultural terms and to learn about the latest theories and practices for regional construction taking advantage of cultural creativity. In the subject Regional Fieldwork, students are planned to actually go to regions and conduct surveys in order to concretely grasp the real situations of the regions.
Students are allowed to choose and study elective subjects freely and expected to acquire profound expertise from the three following perspectives:

Cultural Characteristics of Regions and Cultural Exchange

By studying not only subjects such as L. Socio-cultural Background of Modern England, L. French Regional Cultures, L. Cultural History of Chinese Regions, L. Regional History in Japan, L. African Culture, and L. Comparative Literature and Cultural Exchange, but also those including S. Cultures of East Asia, S. Regional Cultures of Central & East Europe, S. Theoretical Approaches to Cultural Exchange”, and S. Japanese Culture, students are expected to learn about the formation and changes of cultural characteristics of regions, various types of exchanges, and related problems. Through this process, students are expected to acquire the capability to plan relevant utilization measures in consideration of cultural consciousness and functions, and international communication skills in order to connect and have dialogues with different cultures without any prejudice.

Regional Vitalization Taking Advantage of Cultural CreativityBy applying and studying subjects offered in the Field of Regional Policy, in addition to the subjects such as L. Arts Management, students are expected to acquire the necessary knowledge to plan and design cultural policies. This will allow them to develop their ability to discover problems, conduct analyses, and plan out policies necessary for realistic and effective policy planning, on the basis of comprehension of governance mechanisms of administrations, companies, and the like.

Regional Vitalization through Artistic CultureBy applying and studying theoretical subjects regarding artistic culture or practical subjects focused on artistic expressions, such as Art StudyⅠ, Art StudyⅡ, and S. Art Seminar, students are expected to acquire the ability to plan and conduct effective projects or take measures for the promotion of regional artistic cultures and subsequent regional vitalization.

Research Contents of the Department of Regional Culture

KADOTA, Machiko
I have been engaged in research into the ways in which the Chinese character culture of the eastern world was perceived in France as an exotic culture at the polar opposite of Western rationalism. Currently I’m working on analyses of cultural diversity, acceptance and nonacceptance in relation to immigrants in the EU countries, from the standpoint of comparative culture and media theories.
Originally I specialized in modern language research, applied linguistics, and foreign language education. I am currently engaged in research into a broader range of themes, such as languages, culture, cross-cultural understanding, cross-cultural communication, and particularly, global education, international exchange, global citizens, and global issues.
TANAKA, Hitoshi
Research into waka poetry in the late Edo Period. In particular, studies on the poet Kagawa Keiki, and his Keien School, in terms of establishment and changes of theories regarding waka, and history of formation of the waka society through examining the materials written by Keiki himself or kept by temples or merchant families associated with him.
NAITO, Hisako
Research into music culture and issues of cultural nationalism in central and eastern Europe, and the Czech Republic in particular, from the viewpoint of ethnic identity or sense of tradition including folklore, as well as various aspects of modern and contemporary Viennese culture.
NODA, Kunihiro
In consideration of the paradigm shift from “goods” production to “culture” production following the information revolution, the approaches to revitalization of regions or cities with utilization of creativity contained in art or culture, by reference to examples in cities of the EU countries, or successful cases in Japan.
Research into British culture in the 17th and 18th centuries, mainly in terms of literary and political ideas. This region and period is the seat of the beginning of the cultural phenomenon of “the Modern Age” so frequently covered in the media. I have been focusing on researches into this “Modern Age” as well as its closely related issue of “citizens.”
Anthropological studies into societies of Adioukrou in Cote d’Ivoire and Tuareg in Niger, West Africa, in terms of modernization, changes in age consciousness, relations between cities and villages, and so on.
ENOKI, Hisashige
Research into Japanese language and its history, and history of Japanese phonology in particular. I am working on reconstruction of the history of Japanese phonology with regard to the classics (used until the end of 16th century).

Research into the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate in terms of religion and culture as well as politics and economy. In particular, research into history and topography of regions or remembrance of the war dead, with a view to clarification of historical sense in Japanese regions of the 19th century.

Researches into Japanese literature in and after the Meiji Era, in terms of the relations between the changes in discourse structure found in writing style, narration, points of view, etc, and the elements regarding cultural history such as regional characteristics in cross-cultural recognition and formation of readership, from the perspective of genre organization in literature, composition education, and the like.
NAGARA, Hiromi

Focus on modern and contemporary English writers having cultural hybrids as their background, or working on the theme of cross-cultural contacts, and analysis and researches into how they have expressed the issues including coexistence of multiple cultures, and relations between cultural globalization and identity.

History of English, and early modern English represented by Shakespeare. Recently, I have been working on the issues such as grammaticalization and development of discourse markers.
Historical consideration on relations between“the political”and“the religious”elements in France, ranging from“Dechristianizing Movement”in the time of the French Revolution to the issues surrounding today’s laマcit?(principle of separation of church and state in France).
KOSAKA, Kazuharu
Somewhat art-centered research projects into the kinds of roles that artistic culture has played and should play for human society and regions from the standpoint of the history of art and aesthetics, as well as expressions of artistic culture in regional communities in the future.
Production of sculpture in the motif of human bodies and nature, aimed not at representation but at contemporary figurative expression incorporating natural elements in symbolic terms, adopting the concept of “Mitate (similar to Simulationism),” which is unique to spatial sculptures.
Composition, arrangement and direction for theatrical productions such as operas, ballets and musicals, orchestral music, chamber music, and choral music, as well as art management activities including planning and direction of opera performances and various concerts.
Creation and performance of dances, dancing with a variety of communities, and instruction of dancing and movements for children with disability, with the interest in inclusive activities, as well as observation on aesthetic and psychological characteristics of dancing, inspired by Laban’s movement analysis.
Studies of performance interpretation and vocalization of vocal music (mainly Italian or Japanese songs), expression methods of operas, with focus on the works of Mozart, as well as instruction methods of choral music or vocalism for beginners, under consideration.
HIRAI, Satoru
Searches for possibilities of new sculpture, through production of art works and designs with the utilization of constructive art methods. I am now focusing on the method of repetition, a constructive technique applicable to both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works.
GOTO, Tomoko

Planning and management of artistic culture activities with the utilization of existing structures or urban space, researches into contemporary meanings of production or artistic culture activities conducted by communities, and town development through artistic culture, as the pillars of practices and researches.
