Philosophy of the Faculty of Regional SciencesThe term “region” indicates a space where people live and the social relationships that take place in it. The world is comprised of a variety of “regions” that differ in scale and content. To address regions, therefore, is to address the diverse issues that humankind must face and solve. “Regional sciences” aim to solve various public issues in regions by restructuring existing academic frameworks from a “regional” perspective. Everything that constitutes a community, such as living spaces, town development, cultural activities, the natural environment and education that supports people, can be a subject of research in regional sciences.

The Faculty of Regional Sciences aims to develop key people who will lead the sustainable development of regions by providing education that addresses regional public issues from environmental, cultural, educational and political perspectives.

For example, it is within the communities where people live that they come to gain a realistic understanding of global environmental issues. When they strive to solve these issues, however, they also encounter issues that can only be solved via interregional cooperation or on a global basis, that is to say, beyond individual regions.

Culture, on the other hand, presents more fundamental issues of human society, such as identities and raison d’être of people. Focusing not only on the global consumption culture, but also on local creative culture and the arts and leveraging their interregional relationships will lead to the realization of vigorous societies. In order to solve these issues, it is necessary to effectively organize and enhance the educational ability of not only schools, but also of each community where people live. Since today’s education presents many complex problems that cannot be solved by schools alone, it is essential to develop the educational ability of each community.

Moreover, in order to develop vigorous communities, policies that tap into community resources and abilities are also required. To this end, theories for the development of new relationships among governments, residents and businesses must be formed and implemented.

The Department of Regional Policy, the Department of Regional Education, the Department of Regional Culture, the Department of Regional Environments and the Art Center in the Faculty of Regional Sciences act as vehicles to implement these principles

Characteristics of the Faculty of Regional Sciences

Characteristics of the Faculty of Regional SciencesThe Faculty of Regional Sciences focuses on fieldwork that is closely related to a community or region, the subject of education and research of the Faculty, as well as classroom work where regional themes are pursued.

Students conduct regional surveys themselves for six months or one year, through which they are expected to develop practical skills to solve problems. The Faculty also focuses on small group instruction to enhance student awareness of current issues and the ability to think on their own, through graduate work and various lectures that start with introductory seminars in the first semester of their freshman year.

The Faculty strives to keep the barrier between the faculty and students low and create space for close, heart-warming communication.
