Requirements for Graduation and Degrees

Each student is required to be enrolled for two years or more, acquire 30 units or more of the subjects designated in each master course, and obtain passing grades in the master’s thesis and final examination in order to graduate.

Requirements for Graduation and DegreesHowever, students who have been enrolled for one year or more and have achieved outstanding accomplishments may be allowed to graduate within the following year. Under the system of course term extension, which applies to adult students, the enrollment period may be extended to 4 years maximum.
Students who have finished the courses will be granted the following degrees:

Major of Regional Science: Master of Regional Science

Major of Education: Master of Education

Future Career Paths

Master of Regional ScienceThink tanks or local governments involved in public policies, financial institutions or private companies engaged in a variety of consultation services, NPOs or NGOs which deal with various issues on a regional bottom-up basis, and similar organizations.

Master of Educationlocal governments involved in lifelong education or education planning, welfare facilities including childcare centers, education-related enterprises, teaching positions at elementary schools, schools for children with special needs, or kindergartens in particular need of staff capable of school development or study support.

Available Teaching Licenses

Among students who have finished the program in this graduate school, those who have acquired credit for certain designated subjects will be granted the following specialized teaching licenses or qualifications. However, obtaining these specialized licenses is contingent on possession of Class 1 teaching licenses of relevant school classifications and subjects as the basic qualification.

Admission of Foreign Students

We are actively accepting foreign students. In consideration of foreign students’ background, we will provide guidance to improve student research skills. In addition, we will support their studies and research projects through utilization of the foreign student tutor system.

Admission of Mature Students and Working Professionals

For the purpose of continuing education, we are actively accepting mature students and working professionsals, such as in-service teachers, staff members of local governments, corporate employees, and staff of NPOs engaged in regional development, in particular. In providing study guidance, consideration will be given in order to connect work experiences and research in organic terms, and preferential measures will be applicable for the purpose of helping students acquire credit and degrees.

Application of Special Measures in Terms of Educational Methods

[For Working Professionals] With regard to working professionals who anticipate difficulty in conducting studies in accordance with the ordinary curriculum, for the purpose of allowing them to be enrolled in this school while in service, night or holiday classes will be offered as necessary, as preferential measures. In respect to preferential measures, students are required to make applications in order to inform the dean of the subjects they wish to study outside ordinary academic and lecture hours.

 

[For In-Service Teachers Enrolled through Special Selection of Working Professionals]
With regard to working professionals who have worked in teaching for three years or more in schools stipulated in Article 1 of the School Education Act, the following preferential measures will be approved to be applied, on the basis of the student’s application: In the first year of the 2-year term of the master’s course, they are required to concentrate on taking classes and conducting studies in the graduate school and apply and study subjects lectured in ordinary school hours. In the second year, they are allowed to serve in each school, and come to this graduate school for study guidance on the days designated by this school, in order to acquire credits of necessary subjects.

Application of Extended Course Term

The system of extended course terms allows students to be enrolled for 4 years maximum by paying 2 year’s worth of tuition. Working professionals who wish to make use of this system are required to submit applications upon enrollment in order to notify the length of term period they wish to choose (3 or 4 years).

Scholarships and Waivers of Tuition and Enrollment Fees

Reduction or Exemption of Admission Fee and Tuition

[Exemption for Economic Hardship]
Under this system, students who have difficulty in paying tuition for financial reasons will be exempted from paying the admission fee, the entirety or half of the tuition to be paid in each school term, in accordance with the applications submitted by students and results of the relevant selection.
