Field of Regional Environment

This department is designed to foster human resources not only capable of conducting comprehensive environment researches and surveys in order to grasp environmental characteristics in each region but also equipped with specialized skills for the field of regional environment, which deals with conservation of the natural environment and harmonious coexistence of man and nature. To that end, educational research will be based on the combination of theories and practices for broad perspectives and deeper understanding in order to survey and analyze the nature and history of regions and encourage the shift to an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Features of the Curriculum

Besides the subjects Master’s Thesis ResearchⅠ,Ⅱ (8 units in total), for the purpose of combining theories and practices, the yearlong subject Regional Fieldwork (obligatory, 2 units) is offered, centering on surveys regarding regional communities and the natural environment as a basic subject in the first year of the Master of Regional Science program. Students in this division are required to study and acquire credit for 2 units from among the basic subjects L. Advanced study of Creative City, L. International Exchange and Cross Cultural Understanding, and L. Public Policy. With regard to other elective subjects, students are required in principle to apply and study the subjects offered by the Course of Regional Environment.

It is expected that studying the elective subjects will provide high-level expertise from the four perspectives below, in addition to allowing students to choose from subjects offered in other divisions or courses as they desire.

Conservation of Natural Environment in Regions and Approach Thereto By studying subjects such as L. Environmental Geology and Geomorphology and L. Ecosystem Conservation, students are expected to learn about the approaches to and problems about protection of the ecosystem in consideration of the land forms and geographical conditions in each region, and to deepen their knowledge and understanding regarding the coexistence of man and nature in line with the characteristics of specific regional environments.

Conservation and Utilization of Historical Heritage in Regions

Conservation and Utilization of Historical Heritage in RegionsBy studying subjects such as L. Historical Environment and S. Historical Environment as well as other subjects offered in the Course of Regional Policy and Regional Culture, students are expected to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to design projects and plan policies focused on the Conservation and utilization of historical heritages.

Approach to Sustainable Industrial Environment in Regions

By studying subjects such as L. Environmental Physics and L. Renewable Energy Utilization, students are expected to deepen their knowledge regarding the physical environments and reserved energy in each region, and to acquire knowledge and skills in order to plan out and realize appropriate industrial environment in consideration of regional circumstances.

Safe and Secure Regional Life

By studying subjects such as L. Environmental Health and L. Chemical Materials of Organisms, students are expected to deepen their knowledge about health and living bodies, and to acquire necessary skills and capability to propose and realize appropriate lifestyles for healthy, safe, and secure life in regions.

Research Contents of the Department of Regional Environment

ANDOH, Yoshikazu
Creation of new metal materials and investigation of their magnetism and conductivity as well as research into magnetic structures. In addition, searches for their potential as materials useful for improvement of environment.
KODAMA, Yoshinori
Through studies on geomorphological processes from the new perspectives of “transformation of debris with weathering and abrasion processes” and “changes in sediment transport modes, which results in landform changes”, I hope to acquire dynamic comprehension on landform changes in various basin scales.
TAMURA, Jun-ichi
Studies on the correlations between the structure and bioactivity of chemically synthesized oligosaccharides.
In addition, isolation of useful glycans from unused natural resources.
I am studying regional variation of biodiversity on the basis of taxonomy, ecology, and evolutionary biology of terrestrial arthropods such as harvestmen, millipeds, and spiders. Main focus lies in the process of speciation as a mechanism for the generation of biodiversity.
Hirata, Sawako

Studies on analysis methods of minor components using chemical reactions and aimed at grasping the behaviors of materials in the environment and their impacts on the ecological system. In addition, creation of absorption agents using yet untapped resources, as well as their applications to water quality improvement.
Studies on the historical context of the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate, and characteristics of medieval castles in regional and historical terms. In addition, as the issue of regional historic environment, studies on the river improvement in modern history.
Studies on the history and background of growth stimulation in East Asia (Japan, China and South Korea in particular), maximum growth age in height and age of menarche in the past, now and in the future, and, height increase of the Japanese.
YANO, Takao
Analysis of the formative history of regional environment on the basis of long-term records in sediments, fossils, rocks and landforms. Major target is on the generative process and mechanism of the major relief of the Japanese Islands since 7 million years ago.
TAKATA, Ken-ichi

Studies on the social structures in the Yayoi and Kofun periods, through analysis of the settlement and burial sites. Additional studies on conservation policies and principles of historical and archaeological heritages as significant aspects of the historic environment.
TAGAWA, Kotaro
(Associate Professor)
Primary focus on surveys of reserved wind power energy and research and development of usage technologies of wind power energy with a view to effective utilization of natural energy sources peculiar to each region. Additional research into seawater conversion with the utilization of freezing process for the purpose of securing water resources.

Resarch into interaction history between human and natural environment in Japan. Particular focus on macrobotanical remains, such as wood, for reconstruction of the vegetation in the past and clarification of history of human use of plants.

I have been mainly engaged in researches into life history of trees. Now the interest and research subjects extend over grass plant communities, dune vegetation, and endangered plants and conservation thereof, as well as the flora of the San’in Region.
